In 2024, I had the privilege of attending and presenting at no less than six PHUSE Single Day Events (SDEs) across the globe. These included Utrecht, Shanghai, Tokyo, Collegeville, Copenhagen, and Mississauga. Each event brought its unique flavour and underscored the critical role that PHUSE SDEs play in the professional development of statistical programmers.
PHUSE SDEs have, without question, become a cornerstone in the evolution of the statistical programming community. They provide a most rewarding in-person experience where programmers can come together, exchange insights, and stay informed about advancements across companies. The opportunities for learning and collaboration offer attendees a chance to understand how others are addressing shared challenges, often within the constraints of large pharma environments and strict IT frameworks.
What strikes me most at the events is the diversity in culture and vibe at each local SDE, largely shaped by the leaders who have been organising these events for many years. For example, Koichi Yamaguchi, in Tokyo, who has been involved with PHUSE for over a decade, has cultivated a welcoming and innovative atmosphere that reflects his dedication.
What makes PHUSE Single Day Events So Successful?
Reflecting on what makes an SDE successful, I’ve come to appreciate a few key things. First and foremost is a core group of enthusiastic, long-term members who are deeply committed to the local community. Their experience and vision provide the foundation for meaningful and impactful events.
I also appreciate the speakers dinner the evening before the event. This allows speakers to connect in an intimate setting, which often translates into more dynamic and engaging presentations. Similarly, concluding the SDE with an informal drink’s session ensures that attendees remain engaged through the final talks and provides a welcoming space for further discussions and networking.
Finally, the foundation of any great SDE is, the quality of the talks and the presenters. Engaging, thought-provoking sessions not only enrich the attendees but also inspire them to apply new ideas and innovations in their work.
As we look ahead to 2025, I hope more members of our community take the opportunity to get involved with PHUSE SDEs. They are invaluable platforms for professional growth and community building, and their impact is felt long after the events conclude.
